Despite its small size, the Samsung ML-1430 is a fully functioning monochrome laser printer that can produce decent prints at decent speeds.
Measuring a modest 13 inches at the base, this printer is ideal for the lone user rather than a workgroup or office. There is a 150 page upright paper feeder and a 100 page output. Neither trays are expandable, and nor is the 8Mb of installed memory. This is what will limit its appeal to workgroups. Printing documents with images or pictures is going to take most if not more that that 8Mb.
Setup is simple. There is a quick start poster and driver CD included in the package, but no cables. You will need your own USB or parallel cable to use this device. The driver support all operating systems, including many distributions of Linux and Mac. There is also a copy of Adobe Acrobat included, which is a nice bonus, as the user guide is in PDF format.
Text output is excellent once the printer is up and running. The edges were crisp, without a jaggy to be seen. Toner spread over large images was even, without too much banding on any of the images we tested. The ML-1430 outputs its first sheet after 14 seconds in sleep mode. After that it can produce 13 pages per minute.
Samsungs after-sales support is one of the best around. There is a website full of information, user-guides and FAQ’s. There is also a toll-free number to call if things go wrong, where you will speak to a native English speaker, which is always nice.
Consumables are quite cheap considering this is a laser device. The included toner is another cheap “starter” toner, only 1/3 full and replacement ones will set you back around $38. That’s pretty good for laser toner, seeing as it will last a good 2500 pages. There is also a toner saving feature too, which Samsung claims will eke another 1000 pages out of it if you don’t mind your prints a little light.
With a low purchase price, long working life, reasonable consumable costs and simple operation, the ML-1430 is a good single user laser mono printer. Good quality output offsets the limited office use. Overall, a good, solid laser printer.
