The Lexmark E238 is a discreet mono laser printer that is small in size but big on quality. It continues the Lexmark trend of offering great quality machines for not a lot of money.
The E238 is a pretty straightforward printer to install and configure. The built-in USB port allows for quick connection, and it is intelligent enough to configure itself on a network if you buy the optional network adapter. Once connected to our test network, the E238 was auto discovered in seconds and available for use almost immediately. Once the drivers were installed on the PC it was ready to go.
Printing is where most Lexmark devices excel, this device is no different. Text pages appeared clear and precise with straight edges and goof filling. Images, especially color ones, were surprisingly accurate and would easily produce marketing or advertising documentation. The way the grayscale interprets the color is worthy of note. Even though this is a mono printer, it can still hold its own against many more expensive color printers.
The E238 can output documents at an average of 25 pages per minute. It barely slows down for image heavy pages, it may drop to 23-4 pages a minute for those.
There is a 250 sheet paper drawer and a single slot feeder for different media. The body feels solid and good enough to last. The relatively modest footprint is good news for people with limited space, in this case, size really doesn’t matter. The E238 might be small but it is fully functional. As this is aimed squarely at the SOHO user, there isn’t much scope to expand. The memory can be increased from the standard 16Mb to 80Mb, but that’s it for expansion.
Replacement toner is easy to install and many online retailers stock them. The standard black toner can print approximately 6000 pages, and the drum 20000. At $49, the standard black is well priced and offers a lower cost per page than many other manufacturers on the market.
Ideally placed to fulfill the needs of the home or small office the E238 offers excellent value for money. It is strong enough to cope with almost any job, and produces prints of such quality that it is worth every cent.
