The T640 is a monochrome laser printer that can produce up to 33 pages per minute at a standard of 1200 dpi. When printing images, blacks and grays are clear and well shaded. There was no bleeding evident on any of our test documents, which includes plenty of graphs and images. Text was the same, with accurate shapes and clean lines throughout. No bleeding was evident in either text or photos which is a definite point in its favor.
Paper is fed into a drawer at the bottom which can cope with 150 sheets as standard but can be expanded to handle up to 3850, which is unusual for a printer of this size and type. There are other expansion options too, paper finishing, stapling, more memory and an offset function to add real flexibility to the platform. This makes the T640 stand out in the crowd as a truly market friendly product, that can span the usual workgroup divides with ease.
The little LCD screen is backlit, and is clear enough to be able to be read the instructions on there. The function buttons are on the silver fascia and are simple enough for all users to be able to handle without any trouble.
Installation is easy, with the driver software package installing in a little over a minute. There is a decent software package to accompany the drivers, including Lexmark’s own image processing tools, and support for Linux and Mac. The T640 supports, PCL and PostScript, which also works with Windows and Mac computers.
Replacement cartridges are easily accessible, the standard printing 21000, and the high yield printing 32000 sheets each. These are great value for money and will keep most users printing for many weeks.
As a printer the T640 is a good prospect for a small, home office, or single user. Rarely do we see something that spreads evenly across configurations with different needs. The all-in-one box will suit single of SOHO users, but the expandability will appeal to larger workgroups and businesses too.
