The Lexmark C534 is a color laser printer that offers everything a more expensive device should with the print quality to match. If this was priced a couple of hundred dollars more than it was, it would still be a good deal.

The C534 is a tall device but small enough to fit on the end of a desk. It looks remarkably similar to the other models in the “C” range but there is nothing wrong with that. They all have more of a vertical construction than many others on the market, so the footprint is kept small. This is to appease the target market of SOHO users, where desk space may be limited.

Print speed is average in its class with it producing at a rate of 22 pages per minute monochrome and color at 21 pages per minute. It’s good to see a laser printer that doesn’t grind to a halt or half the rated speed as soon as it needs to imprint color.

Print quality is excellent for text, and very good for images and photographs. Color reproduction was accurate and looked almost as good on paper as it did on the screen. Image quality was good, with only a little evidence of artifacts on our photo sample. Text was very clear, with edges being clear and sharp even down to the smallest points. This is performance that is way above its cost, something which the other manufacturers should take note.

The control panel is simple and easy to use. It has a few buttons for features and menu navigation built around the clear LCD screen. It displays print status, error codes, and other useful information.

Paper is handled by a 250 sheet paper tray at the base. There is also an optional 550 sheet drawer you can buy if you need more capacity. The output tray is quite limited so adding such an amount of paper storage might be a false economy. Lifting a flap at the front reveals the toners. There are four that sit in a row one above the other. This is why the printer is taller than it is wide. The paper flows from the bottom, over the drum and ends up at the top in the output tray.

Overall the C534 is a good performer. It prints very well and quite quickly. This new entrant into the Lexmark “C” series is likely to be very popular with SOHO businesses.
